Habit tracker apps work for ~3 weeks, then become wallpaper. The problem is that ticking boxes is uncoupled from anyone caring whether you ticked them. A habit coach that asks the right question at the right time — and remembers your answer — restores the pressure.

What it does

  • Daily check-in via Telegram at a time you set (typically 9 PM)
  • Logs answers to a small set of habits in memory
  • Tracks streaks per habit
  • When streak ≥7, tone is celebratory and short
  • When you've missed 2+ days, the agent asks specific questions to diagnose why (no shaming, just curiosity)
  • Weekly retrospective every Sunday: which habits are working, which aren't, suggested adjustments

What you'll need

  • Memory for streak storage
  • Cron for check-ins
  • A short list of habits you actually want to track (3–5 max)

Setup

1. Set your habits

Send to Flowly
Remember the habits I'm tracking: 1. Workout — at least 30 minutes. Yes/no per day. 2. Read — at least 20 pages of a book (not articles, not work). Yes/no. 3. Sleep — was I in bed by 11:30 PM? Yes/no. 4. Phone-free morning — did I wait until breakfast before checking? Yes/no. Store under tag "habits". Initialise streak counters at 0.

2. Schedule the daily check-in

Send to Flowly
Set up cron "habit-checkin" daily at 9 PM: Send me a Telegram message asking me about each habit. Format: Workout? Streak: 4 Read? Streak: 0 Sleep? Streak: 12 Phone-free morning? Streak: 2 Wait for my reply. Parse yes/no per habit (tolerate "yep", "kind of", "missed it" etc — ask if ambiguous). Update streaks in memory: - yes: streak += 1 - no: streak = 0 If any habit just hit a 7-day streak, congratulate by name. If any just broke a streak ≥3, ask one specific follow-up question: - "What got in the way of your workout today?" Do NOT ask if I broke a 0-day streak (just reset quietly).

3. Weekly retrospective

Send to Flowly
Set up cron "habit-week" every Sunday at 8 PM: Pull this week's data from "habits" memory. For each habit: - Days completed / total - Current streak - Trend vs last week (better, worse, same) Then write a 100-word reflection: - Which habits stuck this week? - Which got skipped most? Pattern visible? - One tiny adjustment to suggest for next week Send as Telegram message.

Tips

  • Don't track more than 5 habits. Beyond that the daily checkin becomes long, you start lying to skip it, the data corrupts. Start with 3.
  • Pick visible-action habits, not feeling-based ones. "Workout" beats "Be productive" because it has a yes/no answer.
  • Honest answers > pretty streaks. Tell the agent: "If I tell you I did the habit and you suspect I didn't, ask. Don't accept lazy yeses." It's surprisingly hard to lie to a follow-up question.
  • Short streaks are fine. A 4-day streak that you actually did is more useful than a 30-day streak you're padding. Resetting often is honest tracking.
  • Pair with weekly habit retirement. A habit that's been "yes" for 60+ consecutive days is now a default — drop it from the list, add a new one. Tracker stays small, you keep growing.
